Lack of sleep affects us physically, mentally and emotionally, causing a negative impact on our daily lives. Anxiety, depression and SAD syndrome are just some of the common issues linked to poor sleeping patterns and can leave us feeling lonely, stressed and with no energy. Sleep is essential for good health and clear skin so it’s important that we try and get in a good 8 hours each night to help maintain this.
HOW DOES SLEEP AFFECT OUR SKIN?
The most effective time for our liver to cleanse the blood is when we are sleeping. This helps to boost the skins oxygen levels, improving blood circulation and leaves the skin looking bright and plump. An increase in oxygen can help to kill certain bacteria and heal wounds helping with skin conditions like acne.
Sleep deprivation affects the moisture and PH levels within the skin. When these decrease, they cause the skin to become imbalanced leading to dehydration, redness and breakouts.
Sleep helps with the skin’s collagen and elastin production, helping to keep the skin looking firm, toned and the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles to be reduced.
Stress is a common side effect caused by a lack of sleep. Stress affects the skin in many ways and causes skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis to worsen, become more inflamed and uncomfortable.
Dark circles around the eyes is the most common sign of a poor night’s sleep. When we are tired the body produces cortisol which is a stress hormone that causes darkness around the eyes.
TIPS ON HOW TO GET A BETTER NIGHT'S SLEEP
